Worried about someone?

What is it?

Sexual Harm Services supports adult victims (of all genders) of recent or historic rapes and/or sexual assaults.

  • Support for People Overcoming Sexual Assault

We provide 24/7 rape/sexual assault support, including support to attend medical exams or whilst giving Police statements; access to counselling (both ACC and non- ACC); support for parents/whanau of people who have been sexually abused; support and advocacy services; and community education and resources.
This service is delivered in conjunction with the Doctors for Sexual Abuse Care and Police.
If you are an external agency wanting to refer a client or are a client wanting to self- refer into this service please contact us for further information and support.

  • Support for Family and Friends

Central Lakes Family Services can provide information and advice to those who are concerned about a friend or family member. Someone is available on our duty phone from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, to listen and respond to your concerns with experienced and practical advice.
Some immediate ways you can help:
ACKNOWLEDGE THAT THEY ARE IN A VERY DIFFICULT AND SCARY SITUATION, BE SUPPORTIVE AND LISTEN.
Let them know that the abuse is not their fault. Reassure them that they are not alone and that there is help and support out there. It may be difficult for them to talk about the abuse. Let them know that you are available to help whenever they may need it. What they need most is someone who will believe and listen.
    BE NON-JUDGMENTAL.
Respect your friend or family member’s decisions. Do not criticize their decisions or try to make them feel guilty. This may isolate them even more and they will need your support even more during those times.
Support is critical and the more they feel supported by people who care for them, the easier it will be for them to take the steps necessary to move forward.
ENCOURAGE THEM TO REACH OUT TO PEOPLE WHO CAN PROVIDE HELP AND GUIDANCE.
Encourage them to call us at Central Lakes Family Services
on: 0508 440 255. Offer to come with them to a meeting with one of our experienced staff. If they wish to go to the police or Doctor’s offer to go along for moral support.
REMEMBER THAT THIS IS THEIR JOURNEY.
It is difficult to see someone you care about experiencing trauma. Ultimately they are the one who has to make the decisions about what they want to do. It’s important for you to support them no matter what they decide, and help them find a way to seek help when they are ready.
